Vanadium and Cancer

Unless you're a real science fiend or were tested on the
periodic table in chemistry class, vanadium is likely a
mineral you have never heard of. Even though vanadium is
consumed in very small doses, its benefits are plentiful
and in some cases absolutely essential. Vanadium has been
shown to aid in lowering blood cholesterol levels, controlling
blood sugar levels, helping to protect and sustain a healthy
heart, and guarding against the risk of developing type
2 diabetes…
What Is Vanadium?
Vanadium is a trace mineral
found in many of the common foods that Americans eat every
day. The human body uses vanadium for normal metabolic processes
and for the healthy growth of bones and teeth. However,
recent research is showing that it may do much more than
that by assisting with cholesterol reduction and stabilizing
blood sugars in type 2 diabetics.

How Does Vanadium Work?
Vanadium has been studied
for its effects on lowering blood cholesterol levels, which
it does by interfering with cholesterol production in the
body. Also, animal studies have shown that vanadium might
be helpful in regulating blood sugar levels in diabetic
rats. It appears that vanadium can mimic the likeness of
insulin, which is a hormone produced by the body that works
to regulate blood sugar. A chronic imbalance of blood sugar
can lead to type 2 diabetes, a commonly self-inflicted disease
that cannot be cured. Studies showing that vanadium may
be helpful in controlling this disease are promising. However,
this information is still being studied and further results
will be needed to determine whether or not it is a safe
and effective treatment for blood sugar control in humans.
How Can I Make The Most
Out Of Vanadium?
There is no RDA for vanadium,
but there is an Adequate Daily Dietary Intake recommendation
of 10-30 micrograms per day. The western (American) diet
supplies an adequate amount of vanadium each day from food
sources such as black pepper, mushrooms, shellfish, soy
products, parsley and dill seed.
